About.me appeared in December of 2009. The site was based in San Francisco, California, founded by Tim Young, Tony Conrad, and Ryan Freitas. Since the day it first went live, About.me was intended to give users a better way to create a personalized page. The user can link their existing profiles to About Me to generate the ultimate go to resource for anyone that wants to know about them.
About.me isn’t just another social networking website. Users create a profile, however they can use About Me to connect all of their existing profiles across the internet. Many sites want users to create a profile as a new, separate source of information about them. About.me encourages users to draw all of those sources together so the are accessible from a single, easy to find location.
With low key blues and the occasional soft yellow highlight, About Me definitely gives of an air of adulthood. While other popular sites, especially social networking venues, seem to be mixed with a high concentration of children and teens. About.me offers a more mature atmosphere for users to create a profile they don’t mind sharing with friends and colleagues. That’s not to say About Me has no personality. The tools available make it easy for a user to create a highly personalized site that reveals information about them as well as their character and personal preferences.
About.me gets right to the point on the homepage. A new visitor that wants to become a member can simply fill out the large email and About.me URL fields and click the green “Reserve my URL” button. This process may change in the future because About Me is still in its beta stage. Users that submit their email address and desired URL are advised that an email is sent to confirm their pre-registration which will be active when the site goes live.
There is currently no cost associated with About.me. The site does not mention a premium paid account, and in reality the features offered really do not warrant one. Of course this could change in the future, because About.me is still in beta. No indication is provided about whether a paid account option is going to be offered. Based on the information shown on the site currently, About.me will be a free to use web profile tool for anyone that is willing to sign up. Users can pre-register for an account, which might be a good idea in case there are any limitations later on.
Mature users that are looking for a good way to link all of their internet profiles can appreciate About.me. The site is well organized and makes it easy for a user to build their own central headquarters for personal profiles and links online. Although for now, the tone seems to be more in line with twenty somethings and up, that doesn’t mean About.me will not change or add features that will draw in a younger crowd later on.
